Florida Green Building Coalition Announces New Standards Committee Chairs

PETERSBURG (June 10, 2024) – The Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC), the state’s leading certifier of green residential and commercial construction, land developments and local governments, has announced that Denise A. Bas, AIA will serve as chair of the Commercial Standards Committee and Daniel J. Denis is the new chair of the High-Rise Standards Committee.

“Thanks to Denise and Daniel for stepping into these important roles. We have experienced tremendous growth and interest in these two standards. And that’s not likely to subside,” noted FGBC President Bill Kachman.

Bas is President and Founder of GreenPath offering sustainability and resiliency consulting services. Based in West Palm Beach, she is a Florida Registered Architect with over 25 years of experience in all facets of architectural building design and construction.

The Florida Green Commercial Standard is designed to increase sustainable and resilient commercial construction throughout the state. The program is for non-residential properties such as municipal and office buildings, schools, and all commercial occupancies as listed in the Florida Building Code.

Denis is President of Runbrook in West Palm Beach. He uses his 20-plus years of uniquely diverse design and construction experience to help clients reach their sustainability goals effectively and efficiently. Denis joined RunBrook in 2021.He also serves on the FGBC Board of Directors.

Daniel Denis
The Florida Green High-Rise Standard is designed for residential buildings that are four or more stories. Buildings that are four stories may register using the Florida Green Home Standard as well. The program covers all residential occupancies above four stories as defined by the Florida Building Code.

“One of the most unique aspects of the FGBC Standards Committees is that they are open to all members. This allows FGBC members to help guide adoption of new green standards and shape the green building future of our state,” said FGBC Executive Director,C.J. Davila.

The FGBC “Florida Green” Certification Program tailors’ carbon-reducing, green building standards to the Florida climate, allowing builders, developers, and communities to meet green building standards while simultaneously constructing sustainable properties best suited for Florida’s ecosystem.

FGBC recently passed 35,000 “Florida Green” certifications of single-family homes, commercial buildings, high-rises, land developments and local governments.

Over two decades ago, FGBC brought together industry professionals from the construction, government, academic and research communities to create green standards tailored specifically to Florida. Beyond third party certifications, FGBC is also a resource for the builders, developers, contractors, architects, and municipalities when considering going green.

Unlike other green certifications, FGBC "Florida Green" standards take a scientific approach and are developed with state-specific criteria. They address Florida's hot-humid environment, climate, distinctive topography, unique geology, resiliency, and natural disasters.
