Florida Green Building Coalition Announces Annual Scholarship Winners

ST. PETERSBURG – The Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC), dedicated to sustainability and resiliency in Florida’s built and community environment is recognizing this year’s scholarship winners.

Robert Caponegro-Kees and Stanley Carter Oleckna, University of Florida; Jade Guzman, University of South Florida, and Axel Rodriguez, University of Miami, will receive $1,000 scholarships to pursue or continue their studies.

Founded in 2000, FGBC is the state’s leading green certifier of the residential and commercial construction projects including single-family homes, multifamily and commercial buildings, high rises, land developments and local governments. The non-profit has certified over 45,000 projects since its inception.

“The annual scholarships show our commitment to investing in the future of green building in our state,” noted FGBC President Daniel Denis. “We are happy to recognize these outstanding students in engineering, architecture, construction management, and related sustainable and environmental fields. Thanks to the FGBC scholarship committee for reviewing the applications.”

Caponegro-Kees is majoring in Sustainability in the Built Environment at the University of Florida. His objectives after UF include becoming a Project Manager/Sustainability Analyst at a design-build firm, like Skanska, DPR, Turner, Thornton and Tomessati, and Clayco.

Oleckna is majoring in Forest, Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences with a concentration in Ecological Restoration at the University of Florida , he wants to pursue a career in academia as a professor and researcher focused on ecological restoration and environmental sustainability, focusing on developing science driven restoration strategies.

Guzman is majoring in a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Global Sustainability at the University of South Florida. Her objective after college is to pursue a PhD focused on environmental justice and environmental policy; to examine how climate change and environmental decision-making disproportionately impact marginalized communities

Rodriguez is majoring in Urban Sustainability and Resilience at the University of Miami. His objectives after graduation focus on leveraging his background in communications and marketing analytics to bridge the gap between technical and sustainable engineering and public advocacy A long-term goal is to make coastal communities in Florida more resilient and equitable.

“We had another exceptional group of applicants again this year. We are excited to award them scholarships and continue to advance the future of sustainability in our state,” noted Deirdre Irwin, chair of the Scholarship Sub-Committee, part of the FGBC Education Committee.

The FGBC “Florida Green” Certification Program tailors’ carbon-reducing, green building standards to the Florida climate, allowing builders, developers, and communities to meet green building standards while simultaneously constructing sustainable properties best suited for Florida’s ecosystem.

FGBC brings together industry professionals from the construction, government, academic and research communities to create sustainable and resilient green building standards tailored specifically to Florida. FGBC created the scholarship program in 2016.
